Italian Art & Culture Club (12-18yo)

This brand new online class is aimed at inspiring young people aged 12-18 years through art and literature, encouraging their linguistic self-confidence through discussion of Italian masterpieces.

Over Half-Terms and school holidays our teachers will be delivering online one-to-one sessions on three different topics: Dante e la Divina Commedia, Il Decameron and Il Neorealismo.

Dante: La Divina Commedia and its relevance to the contemporary world 750 years later
1.5 hours per day, Monday to Friday

This course aims to introduce Dante to the younger generation and to show how the greatest poet in the Italian language is still relevant today.
After an introduction to the life of Dante Alighieri and the state of the Italian language in 1300, students will discover a selection of the most salient cantos of the Inferno which still have relevance in life today (getting lost in a life of turmoil and confusion, the importance of friendship and reliable guidance, the journey through knowledge and how knowledge and reason can save us in difficult situations).
The journey will continue with a quick roundup of Purgatorio and Paradiso cantiche.

Students will be encouraged to discuss with their teachers the significance of Dante’s Comedy through the centuries.

Based on the number of students enrolled and their level, the teacher may decide to include in the programme a group session to enable students to share their thoughts and present their ideas to their peers.

Boccaccio’s ‘The Decameron’: the curative power of stories
1.5 hours per day, Monday to Friday

The Decameron is the most important work of the Italian Renaissance author Giovanni Boccaccio. Described as “the first great book of modern Western literature” (A. Asor Rosa), it tells the story of seven young women and three young men who flee the city of Florence to escape the Black Death.

Boccaccio started writing The Decameron in the wake of the plague outbreak in Florence in 1348. But rather than write about death he instead wrote about life flourishing. He wrote about the curative power of stories.

The Decameron was written around seven hundred years ago, however it is still very relevant today. An important piece of literature with the power to encourage young people to use their social imagination, reflect and bond in a time of overwhelming anxieties.

Students will be encouraged to discuss with their teachers the significance of Boccaccio’s masterpiece through the centuries.

Based on the number of students enrolled and their level, the teacher may decide to include in the programme a group session to enable students to share their thoughts and present their ideas to their peers.

Italian Neorealism: social impact and cultural legacy
1.5 hours per day, Monday to Friday

Italian Neorealism has been recognised worldwide as one of the most precious movements in film history. In the immediate post-war period Italian film directors created their own cinematic language looking at the hardships of everyday life in a shattered nation without preconceptions or prejudices.
Their masterpieces had a true social impact, by expanding the audience’s understanding, and enabling them to change the common perspective of Italian society and national culture.

After watching clips from some of the greatest Italian Neorealist films, students will be encouraged to discuss with their teachers the artistic importance as well as the influence these masterpieces have had on the country. What has undeniably changed? What is still timely today?

Based on the number of students enrolled and their level, the teacher may decide to include in the programme a group session to enable students to share their thoughts and present their ideas to their peers.
